The nights were long, the days were exhausting, the cries of hurting pups were heartbreaking and to know it could have all been prevented. Yet that couldn't change what had to be done to fix it. Around the clock bottles, puppy cleanings, cover changes, warmth, comfort and love. Being foster mom's to 10 needy babies who were left to freeze and starve to death on the side of the road, can be a very trying time, but when you are able to see the happy endings such as the story below- you cry when they leave, you smile because they have that forever home, and you're ready to do it all over again if the need ever arises. It's all about saving a life, or 10.

All of our tails are a happy chapter to the rescue's book, but this one is one of those that is just a little more special to us. Pictured above is one of the most amazing families, who opened their heart and home to Dallas on the left(formerly known as Jenny) in early 2010. Dallas was one of the 10 bottle fed pups known as the "Chipmunks". Due to the cold they had to fight off frostbite, and Dallas was hit the hardest with it. She was a real trooper and a fighter, and overcame that obstacle. Thanks to the love and wonderful care she has received, she never has or will have the need to feel abandoned, hungry, or unloved again. They fell in love with her, and her with them. We could not ask for a better family for our girl.
Fast forward to August '11, they were ready for a second dog to add to their family when they noticed the brother to Dallas had still not been adopted yet. Theodore was still in the loving care of his foster family just waiting for that perfect family to come along and want him. Due to him being with his family for a little over a year and a half, he was very loyal to them, and a bit unsure of new people. He would warm up it would just take him some time. This family fell in love with Theodore, and stepped up to the challenge. Unlike so many who expect a rescue dog to come with no baggage, this wonderful family said they would give him the time, patience, and love to work with him and allow him to be a happy member of their family just as Dallas is. How wonderful is it, that not only has the last of the Chipmunk pups found the best forever home- but a sister and brother were reunited!! It was so awesome to see one of the babies again, she has turned into such a beautiful, happy girl - all because her wonderful family has given her the life every dog deserves to have. This is why we do what we do, this is why when the call to bottle these pups came in we said yes.
From the foster mom's of these precious babies- THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts for giving these 2 sweeties the home and family they deserve!

A HUGE thank you to each and everyone one who adopted a Chipmunk puppy. We hope they have brought much happiness and joy to you, and you to them. It took 1 1/2 yrs for this chapter of life to close, but it had a happy ending which is all that matters. The time is nothing in comparison to saving lives. We would gladly do it all over again if the need arises. Speaking as one of the foster mom's, THIS is why I do it. This story, and the 8 other happy ones are why I do it. It was demanding, tiring, hard, heartbreaking, rough, tough, messy, nasty, sad, smelly, and costly, but I wouldn't have it any other way. That's part of saving lives and given second chances to those who wouldn't have had them otherwise.

Dave has been adopted. ;) He left for his new family today. May he and his new family have a wonderful life together. We wish them the best!!!!

Theodore is the last "Chipmunk" puppy up for adoption. Please please pass this info on if you are, or if you know of anyone that is interested in adopting a wonderful dog. We would love to get Theodore a permanent loving home. :) He deserves it, after everything he's been through.

Dave and Theodore are still up for adoption. They are current on everything, except being neutered before they leave for their new home. They are almost 9 months old, and would be an excellent addition to any family. They do enjoy running, so if you were wanting a jogging partner they would love that!
Dave is our "dock diving" dog and if someone was wanting a dog who loved water, and loved to retrieve, Dave is the dog for you.
Theodore loves water and playing with toys around the water, but he will not retrieve them unless they are along the edge of the water. Theodore seems to enjoy balls more then other toys, while Dave will fetch or retrieve anything. He prefers to retrieve the bumper toys out of the water though because it's easier for him to carry them.
Both of these boys get to run and play daily, so they get plenty of excerise.

Dave and Theodore are still waiting for their forever home.
They are two of the best dogs you'll find, and I'm not just saying that because I'm their foster mom. They are truly amazing dogs! They have been raised around many different things, and not much bothers them. They are very alert though, and will bark to let you know something is wrong. They've been around cats, other dogs, atv's, a horse, goats, and other animals. Not much phases them!
They both love playing in the water. Dave used to be shy of the water, but he no longer is. He loves to chase his own tail in the water, and Theodore loves to chase Dave or Dave's tail in the water. They love to run along the edge of the pond splashing in the water, hearing their feet "clop clop" all the way down the pond edge. They have such a fun time playing in water, (and mud sometimes).
They are both completely leash trained, and know their basic commands. They've been raised with teenage kids and older. They are the best little fellows! I can't say enough about them. They are just amazing.
They are current on all shots (including Rabies), up to date on wormers and are on heartworm prevention. All that's left is for them to be fixed, and this will be done before they leave HART.
As of June 8, 2010 when the pups went to the vet for their Rabies shot, Theodore weighed 38.1 lbs and Dave weighed 38.5 lbs.
As of June 30, 2010 both pups are approx. 20 inches tall at the shoulder.

Both Theodore and Dave are still up for adoption.

I'm adding new pictures(taken May 7) to the blog shortly.

Here's a few comparisons of the two:

Thedore is leash trained and knows how to sit, and down. We are working on more commands.
Dave is leash trained and knows how to sit, down and crawl. We are also working on more commands with him.

Theodore loves water and will wade out a bit, then play in it.
Dave isn't sure of water and will stick his paws in but that's about it.

Theodore doesn't seem as quick to learn.
Dave is a super quick learner.

Theodore seems just a bit more mischevious.
Dave is pretty cool wandering around doing nothing.

Theodore is 31 1/2 lbs.

Just an update:

Theadore and Dave are both still up for adoption.
They are the sweetest little boys and are just lovebugs!! Theadore has visited our pond, and loves to play in the water. He'll run out in it, and butt tuck out of the water with the biggest grin on his face. Then he'll run around and go splashing back out in the water and plop down in the water and just lay there. He loves it! Dave isn't adjusted to the water yet like that. He'll stick his paws in and that's about as far as he goes.
Both of them do walk well on a leash and both also know how to sit. We are working on down, and both can do it pretty well but still aren't 100% sure with it.
Someone is missing out on two great dogs. They love to play but also love to lay around on your lap. They are very mellow puppies to be so young.
Their adoption fees aren't very much at all either. Email us to find out. They've had all 4 puppy shots and their bordatella shots. They've had everything done except a Rabies shot which will be due soon.

This is not relating to the Chipmunks, but we wanted to be sure everyone saw this, incase they wanted to pick up a copy of the magazine.

3 HART dogs (Snickers, Chrissy and Spanky) will be featured in the upcoming May issue of Cesar Millan's Magazine, Cesar's Way. Snickers has went to live in Germany with his new family, so he has been adopted since the magazine published. Spanky and Chrissy are still up for adoption.

HART has had a few dogs selected to be featured in Cesar Millan's magazine. Pick up a copy as soon as it comes out, to see our featured dogs.

Breed:
We had the Chipmunk puppies listed as Dachshund/Mix, however as they are aging they appear to be some sort of Retriever. So we are changing their breed to Retriever mix. We do not know what they are mixed with and we do not guarantee anything. We know they are mixed with something else, but we don't know what. Since they were found along side the road with nothing but a box, we don't know at all what they are. It would've been nice if the person who dumped them could atleast have put a note in the box to tell us what they were mixed with. We believe they will mature to be somewhere around 20-40 lbs, but we don't know this for a fact. It's really a toss up, because we don't know their breed. We think they will be a medium size when full grown.

Eleanore and Brittany were both adopted today.
Congrats to them and their new families! We wish them many years of happiness, and joy. We are blessed to have been able to help the puppies out with being a "pit stop" along the way to their new lives.

Accepting Applications / Breed Update

We are accepting applications on the puppies, and they are officially going on Petfinder this afternoon. If interested, please be sure to get your application in (as well as the name of pup your interested in). They are on a first come first serve basis. Meaning if we get your application in before someone else's, and you are approved, you will have the chance to adopt the puppy first.

We are listing their breed as Dachshund / Mix. We do not know what they are mixed with and we do not guarantee anything. We see some Dachshund in them and that's about it. We know they are mixed with something else, but we don't know what. Since they were found along side the road with nothing but a box, we don't know at all what they are. It would've been nice if the person who dumped them could atleast have put a note in the box to tell us what they were mixed with. We believe they will mature to be somewhere around 20-40 lbs, but we don't know this for a fact. It's really a toss up, because we don't know their breed.

A few of the puppies did suffer from some mild frostbite, one suffered from a bit more serious frostbite, but they all seem fine from it for now. There doesn't seem to be any complications. Jenny(AKA Jeanette) did lose her dewclaw nail and one of her other nails. However they seem to be growing back, and even if they didn't fully come back she should be fine from it.

We are posting updated pictures on Petfinder, that was taken February 8, 2010.
Also we are going to be posting the weights of each puppy as of today, and will try to post all the updated pictures to the blog here as well.

Puppy Update!

Another puppy update.

The puppies are almost completely on dry food now. They are being weaned down to one bottle a day now, and by next week will be weaned to solid dry food if all goes well.
Right now we are in desperate need of Purina Puppy Chow Complete and Balanced Nutritional Formula, as well as Newspapers.

The puppies are playful and enjoying their chance at living a full fun life. They are a blast to watch and love to play with their toys. They are full of life!! When you've had a bad day, you can look at them and just smile. They love to give you kisses too. They'd kiss all over you all day if they could.

They are doing great though! We are working on new pictures also. With taking care of all 10, and taking pics of all 10 it gets a bit challenging sometimes.

We've received several emails from people asking if the puppies would be available for adoption, so I wanted to post that here.

The puppies will be available for adoption just as soon as they are old enough. We expect they will be ready to go around 7 wks. of age, which would be sometime near the end of February 2010. If your interested in adopting one(please put the name of the puppy your interested in on your application), we are accepting applications now for them. We will then review over your application to see if your approved, if so you'll be required to put a deposit down on the puppy.

Also, several people have inquired about the Breed of them. We are currently researching this to see what they most look like. Considering we have no mother or father dog, and no one knows what they are mixed with, we are waiting for them to get a bit more age on them. In the meantime we are researching a few breeds we think they could have in them. As soon as we know this(what they will be listed as) we will be sure to let y'all know. Regardless of what breed we put down, we can't obviously guarantee it because we don't honestly know. We are purely guessing what they look like.

We are no longer needing wipes or clothes detergent as of now. We seem to have enough of these for now.

The puppies are still doing fabulous! We have everyone eating Soaked Purina Puppy Chow now. They are still getting their bottles daily, but we are gradually getting them on more Puppy Chow. Within another 1 1/2 - 2 wks. they will probably be on mostly puppy food, as they are almost 5 wks. old(this Sunday, the 7th).

The puppies are still doing good. We are currently trying to get them on some soaked puppy chow. They are taking their time with it, and it's hard to get them to transition from drinking up from the bottle, to eating down from a pan/plate.

All seems to be doing well with them though.

Currently we have enough evaporated milk for the puppies.
Right now we are in desperate need of Alchol Free, Unscented Baby wipes, as well as Purina Puppy Chow (Complete and Balanced Formula in blue bag) and Newspapers or Puppy Pads(for them to potty on).
We can still use Old towels/blankets/etc., and clothes detergent, but our most needed items are the Wipes, Puppy Chow and Newspapers/Puppy Pads.
If you can't donate these items, then donating the money for them would be just fine as well. What money has been donated already has and will continue to help out with the puppies. Thanks again to all who've donated!!!
